Defence House - Wellington

1770 People over 21,528 square metres and 11 levels

The project came about in aftermath of the Kaikoura earthquake. NZDF needed to find a new home as quickly as possible and from the beginning of the project the focus was on speed of delivery.

The major challenge was to carry out an extensive briefing process with the key stakeholders from each of the combined services to create a working brief.

NZDF took over the tenancy of Bowen House which was already mid-way through redevelopment. This led to significant reconsideration and modification in design due to the specific requirements and the complexity of fit out, security and ICT for NZDF.

Occupied on schedule, the new home offers a welcoming public face and a range of easily accessible visitor support facilities. The upper floors accommodate a variety of agencies and security levels. Our design allows people to take responsibility for using the right space and resources for their activities.

A highly engaged client together with a collaborative and driven project team has overcome a complex redesign, on budget and to a very tight time frame to provide a safe and modern working environment
